It's bad all over... everyone had turning wheels in Northern Kidder County but there is a lot of heavier soil that is still a ways off.

It will be interesting with the Texas drought, Mid-west/South storms and late planting in the North as far as supply goes for fall. If people had sticker shock on gas I'm afraid they are in for the same treatment for food.

I am guessing this might be the finishing touch.  It will take a few days to dry this out but maybe hilltop farmers can get a few more acres in.  Durum and wheat is going to be through the roof this year.  Groceries to follow.  What a year.

We got allittle over 3000 in out of 8000 to do. A guy north of us has 200 of 7000 in. Its getting late now and with the crappy weather when should we pull the plug. Had the sprayer stuck 11 times already. Tuff to see water and wet ground in foot high stubble.Like tim said with the prices, i think this is going to be another year that farmers are going to wish they never contracted a bushel. Its going to go up up up up. Good luck to all fellow farmers.

Up here in the extreme NE corner of the state, there is very little seeded.  I think many farmers would gladly plant past the final plant dates but it still has to dry out and that might push it out too late.

Definitely a good idea to plant canola late and even wheat because cool weather all Summer won't hurt them.

I'd say we have another week to 10 days that are still in the good planting window.  Unfortunately, at least half of them are needed for drying at a minimum.

We'll see about prices.  Corn nationwide is about 85% planted.  There will be 700,000 less HRS acres but Russia just announced that they will export 2.5 times as much wheat as last year.  Remember that there is a wheat crop harvested every 45 days somewhere in the world.  Add the fact that a loaf of bread has about a nickel's worth of wheat in it and you never know.

That's exactly why there will be acres planted after the final plant date.  There are HTA contracts out there.  I don't know anybody that didn't choose RP coverage and you need to PLANT a crop the get the harvest price protection.  If you get enough planted, you don't have to worry how high the prices go.

FYI, the Spring price for wheat is $9.89 and for Canola, it is $.263.  After today, the main canola area starts to lose guaranty and wheat guaranties will drop after June 5.

Absolutely, our grocery guy informed us about a month ago that the end of june or early july there is going to be a sharp increase in food prices and that we needed to be prepared to redo our menus again. Its ridiculous.

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

Divide County.
At my farm 0 acres seeded.
Nothing but mud or water.  We've been ready for over a month and have been sitting waiting to do even anything.
There's still an opening left, but it is so wet, it's looking bad.
We're hoping to get a chunk done, wait and see I guess.

Guys up here have indicated plans to seed up to June 15 and some might go in as late as June 20.  That has worked fine in the past.

It is only going to happen if the seedbed is good.  Mudding it in is typically a disaster.

Why not take the Prevent Plant payment?  Some will but they aren't giving up yet.

1.  There is the potential to make a crapload more money by producing a crop.  The price is there now and could get much better.

2.  Past experience has shown that fallow ground tends to get WETTER through the Summer.  That could mean even bigger problems next year and the rules for subsequent years PP have been tightened up considerably.

3.  There are costs associated with PP.  The money isn't all clear profit.

4.  Unlike the past, your PP payment is based on the Initial price and you don't get another check in the Fall if prices rise.

5.  Plenty of Nitrogen went on last Fall and the losses there are real.

Obviously, if it can't be planted to a decent seedbed, guys will leave it fallow.  There are still plenty of guys who haven't pulled the keys yet.

I talked to one guy today who got about 25% seeded (not bad for 2 days work).  Most have less seeded and some are still at 0%.

My potato farmer neighbor at Crystal has less than half his spuds in.  Field work around Carrington was going well.  A buddy in the Alexandria, MN area is done.

If fertilizer was applied and the land not seeded this spring will the fertilizer still be there for next year or will it leach out or get used up by soil bacteria?   I suppose weed control will be important.
