A friend of mine wants to learn to camp and go backpacking.  I've led trips and taught these skills quite a bit, although it's been a bit too long since I've been on a real backpacking trip.  I teach backpacking and hiking for BOW, and she took my class last year.  I'm looking forward to getting out again myself, and it'll be very fun to introduce a new person to this stuff! She's a hunter - for deer and turkey - so she's been looking into lightweight clothing and equipment more suited to days on the trail.  She's already bought a really nice backpack.  For our first outing we're just going to go camping someplace nearby but that feels remote.  I'm really looking forward to the campfire, camp food, and sleeping outdoors.  It's been too long!

Camping season has officially come upon us, which I am going to miss this summer - I am 34 weeks pregnant.  Where are some of the places that you tend to camp?

I live in Nebraska, and we have some great state parks and wildlife management areas.  I especially like the wildlife management areas, because they don't have the people that the state parks have.  Camping, to me, is a tent or just a sleeping bag under the stars - I don't do the RV thing.  I love to take my canoe, and I love to hike and explore and take pics, so I like to hit the WMAs that have a lake and some surrounding woodland and/or grassland.  Also, my rookie friend's dad lives on a farm where she often hunts, and there's a creek running through there.  There's plenty of woodland, open fields, and the creek, so we may do some camping out there, too.

I've led backpacking trips in Colorado and Upper Michigan, and those are fantastic places to camp and explore, but Nebraska has some hidden gems, as well.  People who aren't from here would be shocked!
