posted by: OFH Staff Joan. While I am a huge supporter in involving your family in hunting, I think it is very crucial for parents to enforce safety even at a young age. This includes making sure your kids understand the consequences of unsafe hunting and following the rules of hunting. I don't think that younger kids have an understanding that hunting is a priviledge that can be taken away. In addition they need to have respect for the land owner, the land itself and for the wildlife.

It is great that young people have an enthusiasium for hunting, but the reality is that they are carrying a gun and they need to be prepared both physically, mentally and have a cautious approach. I feel that 14 years old is the appropriate age to get started in actually carrying a gun and understanding the entire realm of the hunting experience.
