No it won't. This is a case where the employees know exactly what's going on and why it's needed. Most carriers I know also wouldn't mind a normal 5 day work week. This is also a case unlike any other in which you have a hybrid company that most people truly believe is government run which it is not. It is however heavily regulated and mostly by laws put in place years ago which are no longer needed in today's global age which hamper their ability to run it properly.

Need to do what every other company does and make cuts, charge the proper amounts etc. Close service in rural areas where they only make a grand per year but pay a postmaster 50 K to run it. How can that possibly be sustainable..

Time for the postal service to be put up for bids to private contractors, use labor without the Union baggage it could be turned around.

I would like to know how much money was lost before PS management came to this conclusion...........................................................................................................................

"Williams said that instead of having a 6 to 6 1/2-hour operating window, it will expand to 16-20 hours in order to reduce the pieces of equipment needed in the network. As a result, the Postal Service will lose 252 of the 461 mail processing centers across the country and 28,000 jobs will be cut by the end of 2012

I'd bet if you did an investigate audit of small post offices such as noonan, columbus, etc. you see they probably loose money.  just the cost to deliver the rural mail to those parts is a loosing proposition with the price of fuel.  When you consider the cost of buildings, building maintenance, postmaster, the cost of rural delivery, the cost of bringing the mail to those small post offices, it would be hard to turn a profit.  those postmasters might only get paid 50K but when you add in their benefits and retirement it costs the postal service much more than that.  Do we need these post offices?  I think we do. for nothing else, they need to be there to send certified mail for legal reasons.  Or at least until some other entity does that.

Guessing the private contractors UPS Fed ex don't want anything to do with it as it's a money loosing business at the prices the post office is allowed to charge, I'm sure if you wanted UPS or Fed ex to deliever a letter for you it would be several dollars, don't know if anybody other than these two could do a nation wide delivery service
Did see a interview on CNN today with postmaster general as he was discussing the steps they were going to take to cut the expenses and it will be loss of jobs and postal sorting facilities and he also said they would of turned a profit this year if it was not for pension obligations that they had to fund, can they survive I don't know but a increase in postal rates and proposed cuts might keep them going, as far as I'm concerned if they delievered mail couple times a week would be ok for me

I deal with a tiny post office every day and this was the exact statement from them. I wouldn't call them out cause they didn't ask for trouble, just a real person in a real situation. Could I investigate the validity or would I want to probably not on both counts. I do know what the postmasters make there and I also know 2 by me that would be lucky to have more than 2 paying transactions per day and of those, how far does a few stamps go? Most people just run in to grab the mail out of the PO Box.

So without restating everything eyexer stated above, I'd say he's right on the money, however I don't agree with him that it's needed. That is the thinking that has helped make them broke. A huge part of it was the pre-paid retirement but it sure doesn't help losing money in every tiny town accross the country. Of course every time it comes up to close them down, the people freak out and call their congressman, raise a stink etc. Most Americans feel "entitled" to the mail. If any other company were made to live up to this standard, they'd go broke too. Can you imagine if the government forced Walmart to build a store every 20 miles so people didn't have to travel....

Where do you come up with 50 grand  for Noonon or Columbus for that matter.  I bet neither one is a level 11 Post Office. All small town Post Offices lose money. That is a given but the Federal Government gauranteed delivery to all citizens when it was organized. Call up the Noonon P. O. or Columbus and chances or they are only open for 4 hours or less a day. Maybe even with a PMR (post master relief) they may only be open for 2 hours. You may also want to check on the mandate of prefunding retireies Health Care since 2006 or 7. That is what really taking us down along with that fruitcake Darrel Issa from California.

I didn't mean the post office was needed as it is.  What is needed is a reasonable means to get letters of serious nature delivered.  I'd be happy with two or three days delivery of mail.  everything I need daily comes ups or fedex.

that was just an around about figure if those would be full time post offices.  don't take that literally.  there are ton's of examples of post offices that size in other states that operate full time.  I was just trying to find a post office that size that people could relate to.  My mother-in law ran the post office in Flaxton till recently.  So I understand what's involved and how they feel about closing it.

This is a problem for many but if the well is going dry, steps have to be taken.  The government has and agency for retirement (SS) why should the tax payer buying a stamp have to pay more for a stamp to fund another pension?  Cut the expenses, loss of jobs, and sorting facilities, and throw out the rest.  Nobody said life is always fair.

Well shiite, why would a person buy anything from any company then that offers a retirement?  That would include, Target, WalMart, every oil company, car companies, and hell even that small mom and pop grocery store.

Social Security was NEVER intended to be a person's frontline retirement plan.

Yes I do along with Mo. Ne Ok.. and many other states.   I am refering to the management of the whole operation should be up for private contractor bids?

Smaller government  and less government spending.
