Me and a buddy (12-pack) were out for a stroll tomight on the backroards, and we saw 5 porcupines on the move, we got 1 but the others got away.  it was late in mercer county, miller told me to take the backroads, so we did.  we say alot of big pines along the road, are they migrating ort what?  father-in-law told me they could throw there quills 10 feet. (woulod have been nice to know 30 mins eailer).  It was a full moon out, do they travel at night and are they worth anything?  footloose was on the radio, with a little charlie danieals, i was just wondering if they move more on a full moon or what?  are they worth any money, cause i got 1 with a mag-light, hard to kill, let me know.  thanks

I've been eliminating skunks & coons at or after sundown frequently in years past.  However last year a rancher I know was arrested and fined for shooting a jack rabbit after sundown using his headlights to illuminate the critter.  ($300 fine)  My review of the law didn't render any definite conclusions.
Horsager, you seem to be a person with a wealth of wisdom on this site,  What's your opinion?

The headlights on a pickup would be a LOT more artificial light than is allowed for any other sort of night hunting, i.e. racoons/varmints.

Porky's cannot throw quills...

"Quills are released by contact with them, or they may drop out when the porcupine shakes its body, but cannot be projected at attackers, contrary to popular belief. New quills grow to replace lost ones."

Porcupines are a b*tch to clean but they do taste good.  I'm sure bckhntr would agree with me.

And No, they don't throw quills.

Porcupines can't shoot their quills at all much less 10 feet. Your father-in-law must have had a 12-pack in him as well when he told you that.

Yes sir, one day too early, try tonight, tomorrow or Sunday... Going to be a good weekend and nice weather.

I dont' think porcupines are worth anything. I shot 3 out by Killdeer in one walk for pheasants. Luckily enough to have dogs that didn't go in face first into the damn things.  A 12 gauage from 5 feet will send the quills a good 100 feet though....

Wondering how the rest got away, they move like 2mph. http://gf.nd.gov/hunting/otherspecies/small.html Hunting - Other Species Skunk, Rabbit, Gopher, Porcupine Open year around. Residents do not need licenses to take these species. I would throw a fit if a warden tried to fine me for shooting a rabbit at night using my headlights, there are NO regulations concerning rabbits!
