Re:That is one of the nicest Quill goose i've seen. That is exactly what a mature "Quill" looks like. Those wings are spectacular. Taxidermists should be calling you to mount that thing so they can take it to shows. Very nice, very lucky to get one. Congratulations

Re:I thought they had mostly dark belly? Don't get me wrong, that is a beautiful goose. I was just under the impression that they looked a little different.

Re:j.k Said: Actually, if you do more than a quick google search, you'll find out that the whole "quill lake goose" theory is something that is totally made up but has been spoken of for years to describe canadian geese with abonormal amount of white feathers. They don't originate from Quill Lake or any of that. I have shot two geese like this and have seen dozens of other, and even dozens more in this photo gallery. They are cool looking with odd discoloration, but nothing more. My brother shot a pheasant like this and I had a robin in my backyard with similar odd white plummage. Both from Quill Lake? Nope. Just some white feathers where normally they are colored. Probably gene mutation of some sort. I did see an article once about a pair of snow goose/canada goose hybrids that were shot near a lake called Quill Lake and I guess this is how the whole Quill Lake thing got started for all canada geese that have any amount of extra white plummage. For what it's worth, yours is one of the cooler looking honkers I've seen like this. |

Re:this is why i always say "Quill" goose. I think most people know it isn't an actual sub-species.....

Re:From what I understand, it is the same condition that causes a few specimens of many different species to have white patches. Think of a piebald deer. There are may other species that can be "pied". The condition is "partial leucism" and I'm pretty sure it's the same condition that causes canada geese to have varying degrees of what this picture shows. It's not albinism, and it's not complete leucism, it's partial leucism. I suppose because there are so many canada geese around these days it shows up a little more frequently. |

Re:^ ^ ^ You would be exactly right.
