Find some old farmer in the area that has a cool invention sitting in his shop, get some money from the State and start up a small maufacturing company in the old school.

If all small towns would have done that with the support from the state the old schools would still be in use, but the State considers only big box companies to be economic development!

Look what Riverdale, ND did with their HS. It was bought by a business person who saw potential in a great old building.  It now hosts a great restuarant, bar, and hotel.  Granted, Rock Lake doesn't have quite the 12 month draw that Riverdale has, but the area is a beautiful spot in ND--great fall hunting for waterfowl, deer, moose, etc.  Not too far away are some excelllent fishing holes, closeby Peace Gardens, access to Canada, use your imagination....and good luck!!  Don't forget it's possibility for socials, wedding receps and dances, regional art and craft fairs, auction, flee markets...

The folks in Fullerton turned an older large building in town into a place where folks could have family reunions, gatherings, etc.  I'm not sure if a private individual did it or if the city did it.

I agree the old Riverdale school is quite a place.   Sheyenne, ND also has turned their old school into a hunter lodge.  Some construction people stay there also with all the work going on around DL.  Rock Lake may be close enough to get in on it.

Bowdon did some neat things with their school. They host duckfest every year, set up a community computer lab, put in an exercise room, etc. Here is a link:

Fishing Farmer ,  Your name says it all.   If it were mine and close to home,  I would consider a fish farm.  AKA  an aquaculture facility to raise fish in tanks.     Did you know that Yellow perch thrive on field peas ?   Send me a PM is you want to learn more.
