ND Mule Deer

Saturday brought tough hunting conditions with wind and snow. Deer movement was slow and there was only one day left to find "the one".
Sunday morning I had decided that I had hunted way to hard to not bring a buck home. This guy presented a good shot so I took it. Acctually I won't lie, I missed him twice before putting one in him. Of course he had to fall into the bottom of a drainage. I wish I could have seen him crash down into it because I am sure it wasn't graceful.
He isn't the buck I had my heart set on but I am proud of him because I gave it all I had.
As luck always has it my brother-in-law spotted a mid 170's buck at about the same time I shot this guy. He came over to find me so we could go after him... To late. That is hunting and I will be back out to try and find one of those big guys another year.

Re:How do you not hunt for what you saw previously! Way to stay the course and then reward yourself with a fine ND mule deer!

Re:Congrats on the success and thanks for the story. It can be tough to hold off waiting for "the one". Sometimes you go home empty handed. You still ended up with a dang nice Muley though so consider it a successful hunt. Love the pic of the pack out!! I may have to start applying out there.
"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground." |
