With this nice blast of cold air we're getting, I was wondering in anyone has first hand intel on what the ice is like around Lake Sakakawea?  I mainly interested from New Town south to Independence Point.  Thanks!

The bismarck tribune just had an article on it. Not much ice from what I got out of it.

Well, I did some extensive traveling out on Lake Sakakawea south of the New Town bringde yesterday (19 Jan) and its definitely safe enough for an ATV.  Pretty much everywhere had at least 6 inches of clear, cracked up ice.  There were a few pressure ridges with water spouting up, but nothing you couldn't navigate around.   Hopefully the warm-up we're supposed to get next week won't reverse the good ice making that's been going on.

Yeah, it's definitely not safe for anything bigger than an ATV.  Anybody every personally witness a vehicle go through the ice?  Does it sink fast or is there time to escape?

Overall, happens pretty fast. Full size pickup, A matter of about 15-20  seconds from when the tires hit the water. I never drive on ice anywhere, without my windows open. If you have your windows closed and become completely submerged, might as well say goodnight. They had an episode on myth busters about opening your doors under water once the vehicle is filled with water, thinking that it would relieve some pressure. Even a super strong guy has trouble getting the doors open once the vehicle is filled with water. My only advice, keep your windows open, all of them, its probably your best chance of getting out if something goes wrong. Also, with electrical locks, sometime when water touches, it locks them up instantly. Had a buddy years ago from Hazen witness an elderly couple go through on audobon. He said there were under in a matter of 10-15 seconds (estimated) and didnt have a chance, he was only about 13 or 14 at the time, but said it happened very fast. Needless to say, getting him on the ice to go fishing is a tough task to do. Here ends my rant, lol... Good luck fishing and please be safe everyone.

Good post and advice.

Had a buddy years ago who's pick up went through. Said they were scrambling to get out. I don't think he has ice fished since.

I was an SUV and it went through right south of the Four Bears boat ramp. They drove straight out from the shore on a pressure ridge that was forming. The vihicle is still there and all that you can see is the roof of the vehicle.

Came across this little sight of floating fishing gear south of the bridge.  Followed tracks back to a set of pickup tracks.  Assuming they made it out. Ice was only about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick

I have a fever...and the only prescription...is more walleyes!!
