I have a little 14' boat that I run with a traxxis 55.  I recently installed an old Garmin depth finder on it.  To run power, I have just been hooking both(motor and locator) up to the battery terminals.  Last night I was out on stump with my little rig and when running the motor, the locator would blink in and out(screen would go blank for a second and come back on repeatidly).  I thought the connections may be loose, so I wiggled them and to my surprise they were pretty warm to the touch.  First time I noticed this.

Any thoughts?

You have to quit using old earbud speaker wire to run that stuff. Call or text me.

Had same thing happen. The power draw from the trolling motor was too much to run a fish finder too...switched to seperate batteries and no problems.

Just used the wires coming off of the unit(power cable).  I has worked fine all summer, but last night was the first time it has done this.  The wires coming off of the Garmin are pretty small I guess, but no smaller than any other power cable I've seen coming off of a locator.  The wires on the trolling motor are quite a bit larger.  Just the stock power cable it came with.

Oh, and it was just the battery terminals that were warm. Once you got an inch away from the terminals, the wires going to the garmin weren't warm.

Clean your battery terminals, corosion causes more heat than you can imagine. Then seal with a battery terminal protector, many kinds out there and they all do a decent job. Good luck boating!!!

That would be my guess too, loose and/or dirty connections.

not a good idea to run a depthfinder off same battery as trolling motor.

Doesn't matter a bit if they are hooked up to the same battery. Make sure the terminals are very clean along with the posts on the battery. Add a gob of terminal grease and you're good to go. Make sure that your depth finder has an in-line fuse to protect that portion of the circuit. A lot of depth finders have a 1amp fuse. Good fishing!

Why not?  I ran my depth finder, trolling motor, marine band radio, AM/FM stereo off the same battery that I started my boat with...no problems.  Proper size battery, wiring size and terminals are the key.

Current draw creates heat.  That's a simple fact.  If it was just slightly warm to the touch, that sounds perfectly normal but the other opinions posted about cleaning your connections and using some terminal grease are spot on.
