I think this image below says a lot.  Here's an HDS Gen2 StructureMap image my friend Chris recorded on Leech Lake over Buckmans Hump.

StructureMap gives you the ability to see StructureScan sonar images overlayed on a mapping chart. As you can see its easy to pick out the key features and spots on the spot.

This is a recorded image in "Save Mode".  You can make a pass through an area first, and then go back and fish it knowing exactly where all the structure is at.  In essence your making your own high definition lake map.

Or you can operate in "Live Mode" where the StructureScan image is displayed over your mapping chart ,but not saved as you move along.  Ahead of your position you will see the mapping chart like this below:.

Pretty cool technology...

Aw crap, who wants an HDS 10 with structure scan?  I am just kidding, I have enough info for my brain to handle even if the fish are there, they still have to bite.  Structure scan has taught me a lot in one year.  This i very cool, and I may embrace it eventually but for now I have enough with the SS.  I will stay tuned.......

Jim,

I may be looking to update to a newer boat. Depends what electronics comes on it if I decide to upgrade them. The first year of the hds was well documented with issues. They were resolved but my question is should I wait one year for such technology? Or did they troubleshoot and get a lot of the problems out of the way before they put on the market?

I know some cannot be found until heavy use comes in but just curious if I should stick to my norm of not buying until year two

Tim...I view this as more of a refinement of the existing HDS platform.  And any potential problems that might pop up will probably be software related, which will be easy to fix by a downloadable update from Lowrance.  The only real changes to the hardware are a chipset that clocks twice as fast, and the size of the internal memory has been doubled.  The StructureScan module and transducer are the same, so it will be an easy rig for anyone who already has an HDS mounted as all the cables, etc. are the same.  Plug n Play...

So I really don't expect too see many issues?  I know Lowrance has had this in development for a while, and what they have done is mostly software, but it does need the improved hardware to run seamlessly.  There will NOT be an update to HDS Gen1's to add this capability.

I know you like mapping, and this is really going to be the ultimate way to map and understand structure.  One pass through an area and you can see every bush overlaid on your mapping chip.  Or rock piles, or weedlines, etc.  You don't have to set waypoints, just go back and fish them.

Like I told ya Tim, Chris will find any bugs on this. Wish it was just an upgrade however but Chris told me that this Gen2 is just to fast compared to the original.
