This has probably been asked before but I may have missed it.  I am not much of a fisherman and my son would like to try fishing so I am looking for help on some lakes close to Fargo that have some good fishing for kids.  We are not picky on what we catch just looking for some action for the little guy.

Thanks, Ed

Casselton Resevoir and Brewer Lake....both good places to take kids.

The two Woodhaven ponds in South Fargo would be some good options.

Yes, we would be fishing from shore.  20 miles is probably more likely of a distance.  We don't plan on going out a bunch, just a few times.

Okay. Casselton would be your best bet. Brewer can be sketchy to say the least. You wil have non stop small gills and crappies at Casselton. There is also two nice fishing piers as well as a playground for the kids right there.  Its a great spot for kids.  I got a PM I'll shoot to ya too..

well then brewer or casselton res. are your best options. you can find some nice sunfish, bass, and perch from fishing from shore at Brewer. Casselton is pretty much just sunfish. both places have fishing docks and all of the shoreline is open. if you go to brewer and wanna catch perch, then go to the south east shore and bottom fish with a floating jig on a slip rig setup. that is what i have always done and get good numbers and sizes of perch. sometimes a walleye or two.

How about the rivers? You can fish the Red River in Fargo or the Sheyenne River in West Fargo. Both seem to produce product fish for your needs. Let me know if you would like exact locations to fish and I can give you directions.

When i went to school down there, we used to fish the diversion? into the sheyenne south of west fargo.  Caught some small cats, and occasionally a walleye.

Bad decisions make great stories!

I actually see people fishing along the Sheyenne at  the diverson every day and have always wondered how the fishing was there.  I would guess they must bite some other wise nobody would fish there.

Thanks for the info on the Casselton res.  Sounds like a nice place to take the family for an afternoon.

Fish where the maple river flows into the sheyenne north of west fargo. there is a little damn there it gets fished pretty heavy but it is none stop action if you don't mind catching bullheads, drum, goldeyes, and catfish. All you pretty much need is a hook and worms or minnows.
