With all the talk of crank baits, I thought I'd see what everyone is using for a stick to pitch cranks.  I've always used a medium 7 foot spin jig rod with a fast tip.  I've read and researched a lot about going to a more moderate actioned rod. I have not tried one yet. Has anyone had experience with this type of rod?

Looking to build a new crank rod, and looking for some feedback on action.

Thanks
Gill

Looking for spinning or casting?

Spinning, I throw what you are throwing and love it.

Casting, I love an e-glass rod. Not of fan of e-glass as spinning rods though.

All will be Baitcasting rods:

7' Med-Light Kistler LTA, Loomis 7' Bronzeback Med-Light, All Star Titanium 7' Med-Light.  I use these for pitching #5's, #7's, and various other smaller baits

7' Med Kistler LTX for things like DT-6 or DT-7FS, or any of the harder digging baits.

I couple them with small baitcasters like the Chronarch Mg 51 or Chronoarch 101B.

I use 6 foot G loomis IMX medium action with fast tip.  Excellent for casting cranks.

Gill,
How many hours would you guess it takes you to build a rod like you're talking about?
Education will tell you a tomato is a fruit, while wisdom will tell you not to put it in a fruit salad.

It takes 3-4 days with epoxy cure time(and that's if I get my kids to bed on time).  4-8hrs total labor into it depending on the threadwork/handle style.

Fast action 7ft spinning for shallow runners, "Slower" action 7ft casting for the "lips".  Not "Ugly Stick" slow.  When I left Ga, 8ft "noodles" were the rage.  You could just about crack one like a whip while "looking at Russia" out of your back door.  The softer action was to prevent ripping the plug out of the fish's mouth upon hook set.  I called BS on this as it's a solution to a non-problem IMHO.  When I was serious into fishing, I always had new trebles at the ready.  I'd equate these rods to a .17 Rem; nice to have in times of plenty.

for light tackle, a 7'6" gloom spinnerbait rod, heavy, fast action, 30 lb suffix, revo stx hs
for normal use 7'9" scheels musky series heavy, fast action, 40 lb suffix on a revo toro 50 winch ---however in hindsight i wish i would have put down another hondo and got the fenwick of equal dimensions.

7ft Mitchell series for pitching cranks great rod for the money,  Also Berkley series one 7ft medium action in both great feel and very cost effective.  I have several loomis rod that I use also but really not alot of difference in the action.  Pair either with a Shimano 1000 or 2500 Stradic and have some fun.  Bait caster rods I use loomis 7ft GTX or 7ft Series one Berkley put a revo on either and enjoy the fun.  On DL pitching in the trees i have learned that a little shorter rod will give you more acuracy when working in the tight spots.
