Feature of the Week - 7/5/09 - Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout
The rainbow trout, also known as the redband trout is native to North America. Rainbow trout are members of the salmon family and are known for their hard-fighting and excellent taste, which is often noted as a nutty flavor.
Typical location: North America, more common west of the Rockie Mountains
Habitat: Rainbow trout are known to mainly stay in cool, clean streams, rivers and lakes. At times, rainbow trout have been known to swim a river to reach the ocean.
Rainbow trout always return to their place of birth for spawning (laying and depositing eggs). This species is often known to eat almost anything, but its favorites are crustaceans, small fish and insects.
Size: Rainbow trout range around 20 to 30 inches in length and average about 8-10 pounds. They can grow to be around 4 feet and 50 pounds.
Description: The rainbow trout are shaped similar to a torpedo and generally have a green-yellow or green-blue color with a pink stripe along each side. The belly is white and their back and fins are covered in black spots.
Method for catching:  Rainbow trout are known to be very fun to catch as they will jump out of the water which makes the catch very challenging and exciting. Trout are commonly caught either by fly-fishing or by casting. The bait for trout ranges from table foods such as soft cheese, marshmallows and corn to salmon eggs, worms, minnows and crayfish. If marshmallows are used, be sure to add weight to the line as marshmallows tend to float.
