Coyote
Typical location: United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America
Habitat: Coyotes are territorial animals with a range of around 12 miles. They are primarily nocturnal animals but are often seen during the daylight hours. They will often occupy burrows of groundhogs or American badgers but will dig their own if necessary. Typically they hunt in pairs and often travel in large groups.
Reproduction: Breeding takes place between January and March and their gestation period is around 60 days. THe size of the litter can range between 1-19 pups however the average is around 6. Female pups will stay with the pack for a lifetime however males will leave at the age of 6-9 months.
Size: Coyotes stand between 23-26 inches tall, 31-34 inches long (not including the tail which is 12-16 inches) and weighing between 15-45 pounds.
Description: The body of a coyote is typically lean with a bushy tail and long legs. Their color ranges between a gray/brown to red with lighter brown legs. The area around its mouth, its chin and chest and its belly are often white.
Habits: Coyotes eat a variety of things such as birds, insects, sheep, poultry, goats, rabbits, fruit, snakes or even food for pets and small pets.
Hunting: If your state allows, electronic calls are known to work great. There are other mouth or hand calls that work well too. The key to calling is practice and knowing which calls to use. The typical caliber is 22, 22-250, or 223.
