Largemouth Bass
The largemouth bass, also known as the largemouth black bass, widemouth bass, bucketmouth or big bass is a member of the Sunfish family.
Typical location: The largemouth bass is the state fish in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida and Tennessee and is known to be found in all of the lower 48 states.
Habitat: Largemouth bass are easy keepers and are found in all different types of water from muddy streams to clear deep lakes. This species is most often found near structures such as logs, stumps, docks, old formations, etc.
Spawning for the largemouth takes place in the spring in temps around 60-70 degrees however If the conditions are not right they can wait for 60 days until the conditions improve.
Size: The largemouth is the largest of the basses and can grow record sizes up to 22-25 pounds and 29-30 inches long.
Description: Largemouth bass have a dark green color on its back and upper sides. Its sides also have dark irregular patches. The mouth is very wide with the end of the upper jaw reaching to or beyond the rear margin of the eye. The eyes are golden in color.
Method for catching: Largemouth bass are known to be an exciting catch that will often jump into the air to try and rid the hook. Largemouth bass can be caught on a variety of things such as crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits, nightcrawlers, minnows, frogs or crawfish. Large gold shiners are often used the heat of the summer or dead of winter to get their attention.
