Feature of the Week - 6/28/2009 - Walleye

 Week of June 28 - July 4

Walleye
The walleye is known as the one of the best eating fresh water fish in North America. The walleye is part of the perch family and are an excellent year-round fish to catch.
Typical location: Canada and northern North America
Habitat: Walleye are known for being tolerant to several different conditions from northern Canada to the southern U.S. Walleye prefer to be in areas of water that does not have much clarity. Typically they are found near the bottom of bodies of water near gravel areas; still this depends on the temperature of the water, conditions of the soil on the bottom and if they are spawning.
Spawning refers to producing and depositing eggs. Typically walleye will spawn near rocky shorelines or reefs to ensure the eggs fall between the small crevices and for protection from other predators such as crayfish.
Size: Walleye can grow up to around 30 inches and 15 pounds. The record size walleye is 42 inches and 25 pounds.
Description: The walleye has two dorsal fins on the top. The color is an olive green to gold shades with breakups of black patterns called saddles. The belly of the fish is white.
Method for catching: This all depends on the temperature. Success has occurred with minnows, worms and shiners in the early part of the year. When the water is over 50 degrees leaches and nightcrawlers have been known to work well. Some also use crankbait. Since it is hard to nail down one exact type of bait for walleye, keep your mind open and have a variety on hand if possible.
When a walleye is caught, most people will hold it under the gills and place the other hand towards the back (see photo below). Walleye need to be filleted carefully to ensure there are no bones and for ease of preparation. Click on this link to watch how to fillet a walleye (http://www.outdoorsforher.com/videos/how_to_fillet_a_walleye).
